If you have mold in your home, you could be breathing the same gas that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein used to kill thousands of Kurds before the Persian Gulf War, according to a local mold expert.
A slimy black mold known as stachybotrys chartarum produces the mycotoxin used in concentrated form in Iraqi chemical weapons attacks, said Richard Reace, a certified mold inspector who owns Enviro-Clean Living in Bessemer City. The homegrown variety isn’t lethal, but it can aggravate respiratory problems such as asthma and sinusitis and can cause headaches, nausea and decreased energy, Reace said.
